The Climate Ambassador scheme matches volunteer climate experts with nurseries, schools and colleges to help them develop and implement their climate action plans.
Originally launched by the University of Reading in April 2022, in collaboration with STEM Learning and with support from UKRI, it was expanded nationwide in March 2024 backed by £2m of funding from the Department for Education, and a consortium of partners led by the University of Reading and EAUC (the Alliance for Sustainability Leadership in Education).
At the end of 2025 the Department for Education announced that the Climate Ambassadors scheme will receive £1.9 million additional funding so that the scheme and its bank of volunteers and network of regional hubs can continue to provide free climate advice to nurseries, schools and colleges until October 2027.

The scheme is open to all education settings: early years, schools and colleges. Many universities are also involved in the scheme, as institutions as well as through staff acting as Climate Ambassadors. The Climate Ambassador scheme is closely aligned with the STEM Ambassador scheme.
