Bike Week (June)
Run by Cycling UK for more than 100 years, Bike Week is the UK’s biggest celebration of cycling and a chance to show how cycling can make everyday life better for people and communities across the country.
Whether you cycle every day, ride occasionally or have not been on a bike in years, Bike Week is for you.
There are two main ways to get involved this year:
- Host a Bike Week Brunch – a simple, sociable way to celebrate Bike Week and support Cycling UK
- Join The Big Bike Revival – free, friendly local sessions to help adults build confidence, build skills or get back into cycling
However you choose to take part, Bike Week is about celebrating cycling in a way that works for you. So if you simply want to go our for a cycle or try swapping a short car journey for a bike ride these are also great ways to celebrate the week and get involved.
Carbon Brief
Carbon Brief is a UK-based website covering the latest developments in climate science, climate policy and energy policy.
It specialises in clear, data-driven articles and graphics to help improve the understanding of climate change, both in terms of the science and the policy response.
Carbon Brief publishes a range of content, including explainers, interviews, analysis and factchecks, as well as a range of popular email newsletters, which are widely referenced and shared.
During the recent COP30 in Brasil, the Carbon Brief team set up a WhatsApp group to which people wanting on the ground updates could subscribe.
Carbon Literacy
The Carbon Literacy Project is a globally recognized initiative aimed at equipping individuals and organizations with the knowledge, motivation, and practical skills to take meaningful action on climate change. Recognized by the UN at COP21 as a Transformative Action Program (TAP100), it originated in Manchester and now operates internationally.
What is Carbon Literacy?
Carbon Literacy is the ability to understand climate change, communicate about it effectively, and take informed action in everyday life. It empowers people to make decisions that reduce carbon emissions at home, work, and in their communities.
How It Works:
- Training: Carbon Literacy courses represent a day’s worth of learning and cover climate science, impacts, and practical solutions.
- Certification: To be certified as Carbon Literate, participants pledge two actions—one individual and one group-based—to reduce carbon emissions.
- Delivery: Courses are tailored for different sectors (e.g., education, healthcare, local government), led by someone with knowledge of that sector and can be delivered in-person, online, or hybrid formats. It is also possible to use the standard to embed Carbon Literacy within other longer courses.
Key Initiatives:
- Carbon Literate Organizations: Recognizes businesses supporting staff in climate action.
- Carbon Literate Educators: Encourages schools, colleges, and universities to integrate Carbon Literacy.
- Carbon Literate Localities: Promotes collective action within communities.
- Carbon Literate Action Day (CLAD): Annual global training event aligned with UN COP meetings.
Why It’s Useful for FE Teachers:
- Helps embed sustainability into curricula and campus culture.
- Provides practical tools for engaging students in climate action.
- Supports institutional recognition through Carbon Literate Educator status.
Climate Action Planning Tool (for nurseries, schools and colleges)
A smart, easy-to-use tool for nurseries, schools and colleges to create and manage their Climate Action Plan, driving meaningful sustainability impact.
The platform is fully aligned with the DfE’s four strategic sustainability pillars: Decarbonisation – Climate Adaptation – Biodiversity – Climate Education.
Whilst the platform has been designed with Multi-Academy Trusts in mind it can be used by individual institutions too. When used by MATs it allows for each school to have its own Climate Action Plan whilst providing Trust leaders with oversight and reporting tools to track progress, ensuring accountability.
Climate Ambassadors Programme
Climate Ambassadors provide free expertise and support to nurseries, schools and colleges to develop and deliver impactful climate action plans. The Climate Ambassadors scheme is part of the DfE Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy. The eight regional hubs also help education settings connect with other support including the National Education Nature Park, the Sustainability Support for Education and Let’s Go Zero Climate Action Advisors.
Climate Fresk
Climate Fresk aims to make climate science accessible and collaborative! It’s designed to help participants deeply understand the systemic nature of climate change by visually mapping out its causes and consequences. The game-like approach makes Climate Fresk workshops interactive and engaging.
Climate Fresk workshops are also:
- Science based: It draws directly from IPCC reports, ensuring accuracy and credibility.
- Collaborative: Participants work in teams, which fosters discussion and shared understanding.
- Systems based: By connecting causes and effects, people see the bigger picture rather than isolated issues.
- Action oriented: The reflection phase encourages practical steps for climate action.
The entire workshop typically lasts about three hours and can be facilitated in-person or online, making it accessible to individuals, businesses, schools, and communities worldwide. The Climate Fresk web site includes a directory of upcoming events, in-person and online. Having experienced a Climate Fresk there are also opportunities to train as a facilitator and lead your own Climate Fresk.
Climate Outreach
Climate Outreach is the first British charity to focus exclusively on public engagement with climate change. Every year Climate Outreach helps hundreds of organisations think about how they can tell a different climate story.
It all started with a question over 20 years ago: how can we effectively engage people with climate change? Decades of scientific consensus, international summits and traditional environmental campaigns weren’t mobilising society to take action. So in 2004, George Marshall and Richard Sexton co-founded the Climate Outreach and Information Network (COIN) to educate and inform people about climate change.
Climate Outreach undertakes research (like Britain Talks Climate), provides advice, runs workshops and training and hosts a library of Climate Visuals (images of climate change and solutions to help tell stories).
Count your Carbon (Keep Britain Tidy)
Count Your Carbon helps schools measure their carbon footprint across all three emission scopes as defined by the Greenhouse Gas, GHG, Protocol. Schools input data into a web portal and receive a bespoke carbon emissions report, along with a personalised Climate Action Plan to drive meaningful change. Probably more useful for schools than colleges – as the benchmarking data is drawn from schools – but useful to see how they’ve approached the challenge.
