DfE Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy
The Department for Education published its Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy in April 2022.
The strategy states that: “By 2025, all education settings will have nominated a sustainability lead and put in place a climate action plan”. This includes non-domestic early years settings, schools, multi-academy trusts, colleges, and universities.
A lot of the initial focus is upon decarbonisation and halting biodiversity loss, but the strategy and climate action plans also cover adaptation, climate education and green careers. To ensure momentum beyond 2025, DfE Estate Management Standards also include the requirement for a sustainability lead and climate action plan.
Support for nurseries, schools and colleges to develop and implement their climate action plans is being provided through the Climate Ambassadors programme, National Education Nature Park, the Sustainable Support for Education web platform and Ashden’s Let’s Go Zero Climate Action Advisors.
